What a scary situation! I’m not sure what your question is, but it sounds like you did everything the right way. I agree with the woman. An owner should not be afraid of their own dog. He should have taken control of the situation.

It may of had rabies? Or it may of been mad or something because it smelled your dog.

  • Rob says:

i think the dog was just being Territorial because he saw you and your dog as a threat

It sounds like the owner is in denial. A dog that attacks without provocation is vicious. He’s just lucky his dog encountered someone who knew how to handle aggressive dogs. Imagine that being a child or someone who doesn’t know how to deal with these dogs. That person would have run away and caused the dog to give chase. The results could have been disastrous.

First off, I would advise the owner of the Aussie that since he himself was afraid of being bitten, he and his dog should not be at a leash free park. It may seem cruel but no-one want to get bitten…
When you put your hand out to the dog, was it palm up or palm down? That makes a difference in a lot of cases. Always keep your palm up so that he doesn’t feel threatened by the possibility of a fist of slap….Aussies are herding dogs and can have some strange fears. They are not rational and may not be based in fact but you never know. It sounds to me like the owner of the dog was scared of it which means that the dogs rules which he was trying to do with you. He is used to being able to do what/when he wants….He should not be at the leash free park in my opinion.
YOu did the best thing possible…pick up your dog and walk away…I would consider reporting it to whoever runs the park in case they patrol it from time to time…do they???
I can only assume the dog either felt threatened by you or was trying to assert himself…BAD DOG!!! WORSE OWNER!!!
Take heart…if you see him again…walk away….All the Aussies I know are well mannered and well behaved EXCEPT FOR ONE and he was not properly trained and turned into the one you met!!!

Hmm. Overall, I’d say you handled that fairly well. Don’t be afraid to put a knee into a jumping dog’s chest, if you have to. Better the dog gets a shock and a bruise, than you continue to allow the behavior.

That dog had no business being off leash, or at the dog park either. A dog has to *earn* the right to be off-lead, and that one hasn’t. Further, that owner is a dangerous fool.

These kind of incidents are why I’d prefer organized play dates with known dogs, rather than a dog park.

  • Answer, no telling why this dog did this, to bully you, show dominance over your dog…This is the very reason I will not go to dog parks of any kind, if the owner himself was afraid of his own dog, then that tells you the dog has been aggressive in the past, and he darn well knew it.

you did all the right things, just lucky it was not a kid that would not have known what to do.

Did you have a cell phone???? if yes, I would have called the ASPCA, not to have the dog taken in, but to report this, and the man would have been banned from the dog park in the future, unless he could keep his dog on leash, and by the sounds of it, he needs to train his dog more, before going back to any dog park.

do not hesitate to protect yourself, raise the foot, and let the dog have it, enough to keep it off of you or your dog…..if the owner does not like it, tuff noodles, they should be able to control their dogs in the first place.

glad you or your dog was not hurt……

in the future, report this. so no kids will be hurt….and good quick thinking on your feet for the way you handled the situation, congrats..
