I would have him groomed. From that point on, comb him out completely everyday to prevent him from matting.
Matts and dematting are painful for the dog. Have a groomer show you how to properly care for his coat. You and the dog will be much happier if the coat is maintained daily.
Old english are likely the 2nd most labour intensive coats of any breed. Once you let it get away from you, you’re better off to shave the dog and start again. But this time, don’t fall behind on the grooming. The old english breeders I know spend 8 hours per week per dog doing a thorough grooming.
Use the detangler they have for girls and a brush.
