Yes they will, my border collie was always trying to herd the other dogs (and the cats too!)

  • Vet Tech says:

Yes, they sure do!!! Growing up, my family had shelties and border collies (also herding dogs) and they would try to herd each other AND my brother and me!!

And kids and other people and geese……..

Hahahaha. It’s cute. Herding dogs with true, excellent instinct will try to herd EVERYTHING.

  • FifiMartini says:

My border collie mix tries to herd anything under about 5 ft. tall.

  • sred says:

a herding dog was bred through the ages to herd, they will herd anything that moves if they can.

  • Melissa K says:

Yes, this is pretty natural. My dog is a collie mix and does this too. We have never trained her at all, she does it all by natural instinct and it wouldn’t be surprising if your dog is doing the same thing based on their natural genetics. I have also heard of border collies that herd kids, by nipping at their heels and moving them where they want them.

Other dogs, kids, birds, toys, a herder will herd anthing it can. . . . That is when they do. Gotta love em for it.

Herding dogs will herd. They don’t care if it is humans or cats or other dogs.

  • Mallory says:

My Queensland will try to heard anything that moves, from cats to horses to children. Its natural for them to heard, but unless his is trained to heard don’t let him try to heard large animals. My dog has been knocked out at least twice trying to heard our horse after sneaking into the pasture.

  • oh yeah mines used to herd us kids all the time when we were little then we just started playing soccer with her and that was all she wanted to do after that you couldn’t get the ball past her. That got her to stop herding.

    Hello,
I have had herding dogs for over 20 years. I love this group of dogs!
We currently have a border collie/aussie mix and another full blooded Australian shepherd and it is so funny seeing these two go at it. They both bit each others back legs and or go around and around trying to get the back legs!
Our Australian Shepherd is rather aggressive getting our English Mastiff to go where he wanted to go.

In the past I have had a couple of my aussies bring big does (deer) to me.
You may find your new dog to be rather aggressive or get stressed out if everyone is not together?
I personally will not have a Australian cattle dog (blue heelers) as a pet, just to aggressive for me. Then again I have never been around one who was just a pet. I have been around them working, and one doesn’t want to be petting one who is working cattle or horses.
You will find the herding group is a very smart, usually loyal friend. You will find many of them in the pounds for the people just do not understand them….
