It’s best to get them as puppies of around 5 weeks old and let them actually live with the sheep and even nurse from a ewe. This way, they bond with them and look upon the sheep as their “family” and they will guard them naturally, usually with no training necessary.Since your dog is older, you might need to find someone who has experience with the breed and have her trained,or if you trust her not to hurt them, put her in with the sheep.Let her sleep with them, feed her with them, etc.,and lavish her with praise when she seems to be guarding them from something. You might want to set up situations with friends,so that she will want to guard them.Have someone “threaten” the sheep ,and encourage her to “get them”.I’ve never had sheep, but I’ve seen documentaries about how these dogs are trained, and read about it.But this is just a suggestion.Good luck.

  • If you want her to stay out with the sheep, you need to put her out with the sheep. Pyrs need to learn that they want to be with the sheep and once they feel that they are in their “pack” they will defend them. You need to start leaving her out with the sheep all of the time, and feed her with the sheep. She needs to break her bond with you (somewhat) and bond to the sheep.

A very young pup does best when it is penned with lambs. It will get head butted yet learn to respect them. Penned, the dog will sleep and eat next to the lambs and guardianship begins to set in. Leave the dog with the sheep at all times.

  • This should be an easy job for her. If it does not come natural for her then you probably can’t teach her. We for a 5 wk old Pyrennes after its mom had been killed. Right from the start she knew what her job was. We had goats. She would watch our goats for awhile and then go watch our neighbors goats. She did that all the time. I never saw a GP with better instincts.
