Chihuahuas seemingly are more popular. Chihuahua’s are being over breed in that everyone now wants what Breeders call a ” Teacup ” Which it just a result of irresponsible breeding. Shelties are known to bark a lot, and have high energy. Merle is a very popular coat for both Chihuahua and Sheltie. I would have to say Chihuahua for Fl

  • Shelties are the smartest breed and the easiest to train. You have to think about your ability to train a dog, and if you don’t have a lot of experience with dogs, it would be better to get a sheltie, but any dog needs training, so make sure you can train a dog before you buy one. I think it is hard to find a good breeder in any breed of dog. It is harder to find a good breeder than a good doctor. The popularity of shelties coloring depends on which part of the country you live in, ironically. Check the prices where you live and you will notice the difference. Here is a poem about shelties that is a good example of what they are like.

    THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SHELTIES:

    1. I will chase anything that moves – get used to it.
    2. I consider myself to be an integral part of the family – don’t treat me like a mere dog.
    3. I will stick my nose into everyone’s business and feel compelled to comment upon my observations.
    4. If you should leave me behind, I shall consider this an aberration of proper behavior and will voice my disapproval……loud and long….often accompanied by frantic twirling and jumping.
    5. I will determine which of your friends is worthy of my affection, and which are to be observed at a distance, before a verdict is rendered. All decisions are final.
    6. I will follow you to the ends of the earth, and ALWAYS into the bathroom.
    7. No door is considered to be closed as long as I can push it open with my nose.
    8. Give me plenty of toys and activities to keep me busy. You don’t want me finding tasks on my own – trust me on this.
    9. I have absolutely no qualms about stealing FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD from any source available, even if it is from the mouths of babes.
    10. I will sense your every mood and will be happy or sad along with you.
    11. I will give you the best moments of our lives and memories you will cherish forever.

I would think the chihuahua would be more common of the 2 and most popular. I see many more chihuahuas than shelties, know a lot of people who own chihuahuas and do not know any personally that own shelties. I love the chihuahuas and have owned them over 40 yr. I like the shelties. They are very nice dogs, just not popualr around here. Chihuahuas would probably be suited for FL, but either one would adjust well. I think the tri color shelties are most popular. Good thing about chihuahuas, small size, very loving, very sweet despite the bad rap. I don’t know a lot about shelties because I haven’t been around them. I know they have lots of energy and would probably do well at agility, flyball, that type of activity. Chihuahuas probably are overbred. I wouldn’t ay the same for the sheltie.

Chihuahua’s because they have been featured in commercials and also movies. Plus, many famous people have Chi’s.

    Both breeds have been overbred.

Me personally I have seen more Chihuahua’s over the Sheltie, unless you count the agility clubs that have events at the local fair grounds a few times a year.
The Chihuahua to me is the most likely of the two to be over bred because of the “fashion” of owning on in Hollywood. Now just about everyone wants one (not me). When a dog becomes popular in Hollywood it usually leads to over breeding and owners buying them not knowing the characteristics of the breed.
I do not know much about the Chihuahua except they are a little timid and some tend to bark a lot. The Sheltie is also timid and a barker. The Sheltie, to me, is a better pet as they are better around children and tend to be a little more friendly towards others.
The Sheltie’s most popular color is Sable, like a collie. There are blue merles, black and I have heard there are red merles (never seen a photo). These are harder to obtain and are done through selective breeding.
I live in Florida and my Sheltie seems very content with the weather. I don’t think either dog would have a problem with the climate.
I love the Sheltie as they look like a dog, not a toy, again just my opinion. They are fun-loving and loyal and are really a joy to be around.Which ever you chose, make sure to get one from a breeder and do some research on that breeder.
