Border Collies are usually the best. I am not sure about the training part. It usually comes natural to the Border Collie but the commands you will have to train him for i am sure
border collie definately. i had one never had been around stock (i only had goats) and she took to it natural. You may have to make some corrections like how they nip there legs a bit but after a while she done great.
Never buy from a petstore, backyard breeder, puppy mill or newspaper, please consisder adopting from a shelter. these dog breeds should not be worked hard until 18months of age as there bones are developing. I know in australia some of the dogs up for adoption have been tested with sheep and some adopted dog do have talent for this work, most will show natural talent if they are wanting to be trainned, but there are places that help train too.

I will put Labrador Retriver in and Golden Retriver, there are some report of both breeds escaping the bacyyard to heard sheep although not generally known for herding. My dog which is a golden retriver x labrador and as a puppy she did show herding signs-she used to cut the children out of a group and another thing she does is she nips other dogs on the heels as if to say, You do what i tell you or else! another sheepdog behaviour.

Border Collies are usually the best. I am not sure about the training part. It usually comes natural to the Border Collie but the commands you will have to train him for i am sure

Border Collie for sure! They are used exactly as you describe and are extremely smart.
Border Collies are good sheep/farm dogs. A lot of people in Australia have them as sheep/cattle dogs!!!
