When my mom had a bird and a large dog it ended up eating the bird. But the dog was a husky so that might be a little different in your case.

You should never mix any pets together. The bird and dog should always be supervised if they are close by. I have bird and a Jack russel terrier. When the bird is out the dog leaves the room.

African grey parrots are long lived birds, they can live longer than 50 years. Most birds mate for life and African greys are no exception. They will usually bond to a certain person and see that person as thier mate. They take an experienced and commited owner. Keeping a bird will be an experience you have never had before. They are like having a perminent 2 year old in the house. They are messy, loud, throw tantrums, ect.

Parrot ownership cannot be taken lightly. Parrots need hours of stimulation a day. They are costly to keep thousand a year for food, toy replacement, vet care, etc.

I believe that greys mate for life. As others have said, supervise their interactions together. Birds can live with dogs, but sometimes tragedy occurs. If the bird gets licked, bitten, or mouthed by the dog, the bacteria in the saliva can kill it if the bite didn’t, so be prepared to rush birdie to the vet if this occurs!

They can live 50 – 80 years with good care!

One of the people on the bird board I visit has a grey and her greyhound attacked it. I know I wouldn’t trust my parrot around my corgi dog. OES I wouldn’t think are that bird inclined… I guess you would have to see how it goes.

I wouldn’t worry so much about the dog having problems with the parrot as the parrot having problems with the dog. African greys are very highly strung and JEALOUS feathered companions in general. Although you do get the odd exception.

As other people have said I wouldn’t trust any dog around the parrot as no matter how well trained – instinct can kick in. Saliva from -cats- is actually toxic to birds as written above. Birds can survive dog bites including saliva with a little better survival rates but it is still horrible physcially and emotionally none the less.

Alot of people will say African greys do mate for life but I do not believe it to be the case. They ARE very much one person birds and will only have one mate at one time ie. until the mate dies – then they have been known to choose another mate. CAGs live roughly 50-70 years.

Our African Grey shares the house with 3 cats and 4 dogs. We have NOT had any trouble with them hurting our parrot.
1 dog is a Lab, 1 is golden retriever mix, 2 are small muts. We have had our parrot for almost 2 years. She even took her doors off her cage, so cage is always open!!! She’s great and loads of fun!!! You can even make your own parrot toys, its alot cheaper than buying them. Our parrot even MEOWS and BARKS!!!!! She’s GREAT!!!!
