I think my American Bulldog would bite…. and possibly kill, but my Rat Terrier would be thrilled to have another furry playmate…he loves everyone and everything!!
Edit:
I forgot to answer your other question…. No, I would not and am not afraid of my dog. My boy has a very high prey drive but he is extremely gentle and loving with me and my family…not a mean bone in his body when it comes to his humans.
Many dogs have a high prey drive.. certain breeds tend to have a prey drive more than others. Just because a dog will kill a sheep does not mean it will attack its owner. There are many loving dogs who would think nothing of killing livestock or smaller animals. Its not the dog’s fault.. he’s just doing what his instincts tell him to do.
Nahh, I dont think they would. Dogs love to play and thats that. There are some crazy dogs, or just natural hunting dogs that will attck though, but most likely no.
My corgi would do the job she was designed for, herding them! And my older dog would show mild curiosity, but even when she was younger, definitely no violence.
I have a chow/husky and he will kill anything that gets into his yard. He isn’t playing he is serious.
He is great with our family but I wouldn’t trust him around strangers or other animals.
All dogs can kill, some don’t and some do. It’s a hunting instinct.
Mine would chase them if they ran, but if they stopped running, they’d just stand and look at them. Some dogs are menat to be high-prey drive, and killing livestock is an expected result if the dogs are unsupervised and untrained.
Mine would chase,My adult was introduced to sheep at an early age so no she wouldnt attack but may nip.
My pup would chase for fun but dont think he would no when to stop.
Thats the thing domestic dogs dont need to go looking for food, there attacking livestock just for the pure excited & thrill of the chase,
which could lead them to being shot.
An owner shouldnt be afraid but should get a book on basic dog ownership!
“However, dog owners are responsible for the behavior of their dogs, regardless of whether the owner or another person allowed the dog to behave in a way that would be considered a violation, such as attacking and killing sheep.”
Straight from your article…
It depends, I raised lambs for the livestock shows here in South Texas for years, and we had to make several attempts to get our Border Collie to “run” them. There were also Austrailian Shephards kept by our Ag teacher for this purpose. They never harmed any of the sheep. With EXTENSIVE training one was taught to nip them gently in the hind leg. The lambs totally ignored this, because it was too gentle, but we tried. In fact, the first maybe… 10 times??? we put our B.Collie “Sassy” in the track, she put her paws over her head and hid. I guess it just depends on the personality of the dog, but most times, they aren’t realizing that they are hurting something. They are doing just what the woman in the story said, playing. Innocent in their intentions.
In another way, they have instincts too. Either way, the dogs aren’t really at fault.
Why should an owner fear it’s K9 child for being a K9?
humm.. my dogs are whippets and the older ones spent 12 hr a day in a cattle barn & didn’t harm a hair on even the newborns heads… they had fenceline contact with chickens without disaster, BUT their linage goes back to the gazelle hunting Saluki so if I did not have a chance to introduce them to sheep in a manner to make it clear that these are not approved prey … well yep they’d chase & pobably attack…
I guess if that livestock killing dog your worring about had never been introduced to HUMANS maybe they might consider people prey but the chances of that are close to zero so no they would NOT
Belive it on not they CAN tell species apart and it not their fault their owners don’t seem to be able to …
My shih tzu would not bother the sheep if she saw them. So I wouldn’t even worry about her.
On the other hand, when it comes to my rottweiler he wouldn’t purposely go kill one. I think he would go up to them, but would, might, become intimidated and then may react out of fear. He doesn’t understand what to do when he feels like that, and we are working on that.
Airedales are hunters. I think it would be very difficult to train that out of them once they kill.
Most of us are responsible dog owners and its like we are always looking over our shoulder to see if there is a loose dog that is approaching. So if we are approached, by a loose dog and even if its a small dog. There are chihuhahuas that run behind my rottie and try to bite him. If he was to turn on them and he is on leash, who would be blamed for my rottie reacting, you got it, my rottie will get the bad wrap for it.
Also killing livestock or other prey animals, I think that is two didn’t things and no I wouldn’t be afraid of my own dogs coming after me.
I think with my rotties bloodline he has a strong drive. If his arousal is up, he could react quickly. If he had different bloodlines, then possibly, because they do herd sheep, he would be okay with them. My shelties that I had all loved the sheep. I wouldn’t think about them hurting the livestock. One dog would have been more interested in eating their food.
My dog would chase them if they ran and probably nip their heels, but that’s about it.
He chases deer but he can never catch them.

my dogs would prob just pester-they cant do much damage when they only weigh 3-7 pounds…there ankle bitters lol

Probably not – they would go after something smaller – rabbits, frogs, birds…
My dog would try and play….. and then get trampled on.
I think there must be more to this story than meets the eye. I don’t think anyone’s random pet would go around killing sheep for fun.
my dog would probabaly just chase them intill she get tired…
nah i wouldn’t be scared of my dog cuz she’s scared of me…
the breed i am interested in them would start trying to work them. Baying and so forth.

pack mentality…if they’re in a pack anythings gonna attack.
there’s no need to be afraid of your dog because it hunts. it’s not like ppl that kill just to see something suffer. they do it because they’re dogs.

My border collie would rip it apart and snack on it’s organs.
My pug would think it is facinating.
My westie would bark at it.
No.
I am not afraid of any of my dogs.

my dogs would want to play, my little dog would want to lick them, she licks everything, I would not allow my dogs to worry sheep.
my dogs would not kill they have lived with rabbits hamsters chinchillas etc and have never shown any aggressive behaviour towards them,
